Ad of the Week: Acura – Calvin Johnson 2012 Intro

By April 6, 2011Ad of the week

Calvin Johnson Acura commercial I don't usually like to do two car commercials in a row, but this one for Acura featuring the Detroit Lions' all-pro wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, has a completely different feel from last week's Subaru ad. And it's definitely targeting a different audience. Last week's was very touchy-feely and hit an emotional cord. This week's is very cool and detached. Yet, it still hits an emotional cord, just not the same one.

The ad itself is very simple and elegant. It is beautifully shot and well-executed. What I like best is that it takes one single point they're trying to make and they do a twist on the demonstration technique to illustrate that one point. It also is a good example on how to use an athlete spokesperson who may or may not be able to act and use them effectively.

In the spot, Calvin Johnson is stripped of his dirty uniform and dressed up very elegantly, including choosing the right tie and watch. The beauty shots of Johnson are then replaced with beauty shots of the car. The message is simply, some cars, like some people, can make embody both aggression and elegance.
