Facebook business placeWhether you are a small, local business or a big international brand, you should have a Facebook page. And it should be an active one. I know there are some businesses out there that don't see the worth. Or they have one but aren't doing anything with it – which is almost the same as not having one at all. So, for the skeptics out there or for the ones who feel there are better uses of their time and resources. Here's my list of why you should be there.

1. Your customers and potential customers are already there. There are 1.19 billion active Facebook as of December, 2013. And over 728 million people log into it every single day. Many of them multiple times a day. With it's high penetration, chances are, no matter what business you're in, a good chunk of your customers are on Facebook. And a lot of people who are like your customers and could become a buyer of your product or service are there too. This is a place where you can connect and engage with them. And if you don't, you're competition will.

Investigate deeper2. Get found by people who are searching for your product or services. Facebook offers you a way to become visible to people who need what you sell but don't know where to find it. Some will find you by doing a Facebook search, some will find you through their friends who like your page and if you run Facebook ads, some will find you that way. Or they could just stumble upon you. However they get to you, it's a chance for you to provide them with something that fills their need and convert them into a customer.

3. Improve your company's chances of being found by search engines. Even if someone isn't searching for you or your product within Facebook, having an active page there will improve your SEO, as more and more search engines are taking social interactions into account within their search results. They also take into account the brands your social connections have liked. And when someone does a search on your name, your Facebook page is one more result that will come up in the list that you links to a site that's yours.

Social4. Create a community around your business. This is your chance to build a community of people who like or love your brand, product or service. It's a place they can all gather and talk about you or to you. And once you've built this community you can rally them to your cause, use them to promote your business to their friends and find out what they like and dislike.

5. Spread your ideas among people who like your company. If someone likes you enough to like your Facebook page, they generally like you. Once you've built this community of people who like you and can put your ideas out there – to share them, spread them and get input into them.

Feedback6. Collect and capture feedback about your brand, your products or services. As I mentioned above, you can share your ideas with your community and find out what they think. You can use your page to ask them what they like and where you can improve. If you're thinking about rolling out a new product, you can ask them there thoughts before you put it out there. For instance, if you're an ice cream shop and you are thinking about three new flavors but only have resources to produce and sell one of them, you can ask your community which one would they like to see most.

7. Provide another communication channel. Facebook gives you another place to communicate with your customers and potential customers. You can share your messages. You can answer their questions and take care of customer service issues. You can post job openings. You can offer deals and run contests. Or you can just have a conversation.

Get customers8. Generate leads. Yes, you can actual get leads on new business through Facebook. In fact, Facebook has generated leads for 73% of B2C marketers and 35.1% of B2B marketers.

Over 70% of al businesses have Facebook pages already. Don't be the one left outside looking in. If you don't have a page for your business, create one and claim your business name before someone else does. If you have one, but aren't using it to it's fullest abilities, try taking one of these areas at a time and start building out your activity.

I'm sure there are other reasons to have a Facebook page and if you have one I didn't think of, please list it in the comment section. Or if you completely disagree, I'd love to hear why.
