I was watching MSNBC a few weeks ago, and they had an interesting story about Warren Buffet and his furniture business (Nebraska Furniture Mart). For those who don’t already know, Mr. Buffet is the 2nd richest man in the world and owns a holding company called Berkshire Hathaway. Anyway, they were talking about the Chinese’s dominance of the furniture manufacturing industry. They said that just 10 years ago 90% of their furniture was made in America. Today, 75% of their furniture comes from China. Now, this may upset those in the “Buy American” camp, but here’s some food for thought: it would cost consumers 50% more to buy American-made furniture. So, before you start pounding your red, white and blue chest, are YOU willing to pay more?

Hey Ron,
Megan O’Brien (my boss at Fresh Fuel) tells me that if I post comments on your blog, you might return the favor. So, what about the lead content of that Chinese furniture? has anyone tested it? In reference to “food for thought,” will my kids get sick if they chew on the dining room table? This is a major concern. Likewise, if my dog chomps on our new Chinese duvet, will he die or become mentally ill from lead poisoning? Perhaps this lead thing goes way beyond Buzz Lightyear and Dora to encompass corner cabinets and couches. Your thoughts?
