Ad of the Week: Dairy Queen – Pinatas with Mary Lou Retton vs. Toyota Venza – Social Network

By July 13, 2011Ad of the week

It's an Ad of the Week Battle Royal! Two humorous ads struck our fancy this week. One makes fun of Millennials making fun of Boomers who aren't as "social" and the other has Mary Lou Retton stuffed inside a pinata.

Dairy-Queen pinata with Mary Lou Retton First up is the Dairy Queen spot. It's really a one trick pony. A blindfolded announcer tells us how Dairy Queen puts so much more into their offerings that they even have pinatas stuffed with Mary Lou Retton. He then smacks the pinata, it breaks apart, spilling Mary Lou Retton onto the floor. She jumps up and does the "end of a routine" gymnast pose. The entire joke is her falling out of the pinata. However, it's so ridiculous that it cracks me up every time I see it.

Toyota Venza social network Facebook ad The second spot is for Toyota. And if features a young adult/older teen sitting at her computer telling the camera how "old people" aren't very social. She's aggressively gotten her parents on Facebook, where they are now up to 19 friends. The girl goes on to tell us how she has 300 and some friends. The contrast is that while she's sitting alone at home with her computer, her parents are out meeting a group of IRL friends, cycling with them and in general being very active and having fun. They get where they're going in their Toyota obviously. It's a fun brush back against all the virtual activity vs. the real life fun with real life friends.

Take a look at the two spots for yourself and let us know which one you think is more Ad of the Week worthy.
