Do you know what fun is? Fun is when a bunch of people who have the same interest gather on one night to celebrate something in common. I’m talking about Social Media Day!
Social Media Day is a day created to celebrate the revolution of media becoming social. Presented by the ever-awesome Mashable, tons of cities across the world came together on June 30 to connect with each other and bond over the common ground of social media.
I had the pleasure of attending Detroit’s Social Media Day which took place at Sound Board inside Motor City Casino. Being my first Social Media Day, I didn’t know what to expect but it certainly delivered.
The day started off with lots of buzz on Twitter and Facebook with the hastag #SMDay #Det. I gladly joined in, talked to a few people about the coming night and even gained a few Twitter followers. As the day progressed, the excitement for the night’s events grew higher and I was pumped to get to the venue.
Now let's fast forward and get to the fun stuff.
I had not eaten much that day so when I got to Motor City I was overwhelmed by the aroma of free food. My friend and fellow social media lover noticed a table set up with Coney dogs. Right then, I knew it would be a good night. We mingled a little bit, chatted it up with some first-timers and some veterans, hit up the bar and of course got a few plates of delicious Coney dogs! There was a live DJ and some sweet entertainment in the form of B boys. There were also awesome prizes (cough Victoria Secret Gift Cards cough) given away to people who correctly answered social media related questions and there were even special drop-ins from Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings social media crews. So basically, Social Media Day was a big party celebrating the wonderful world of social media.
Social Media Day Detroit was sponsored by Big Fuel, Fathead, Bizdom U, Livio Radio and Hired My Way. For those who love social media or for people who just like to meet cool new people, I highly recommend attendance next year. If anything, you can jump in on the hashtag and gain a few new followers!
Did anyone else attend Social Media Day Detroit? How did you enjoy your experience?
