Ad of the Week: Burger King – California Whopper

By August 25, 2011Ad of the week

Over the last few years, Burger King advertising has mastered the art of being quirky, being funny, being sublime, even being a little creepy (plastic king man in your bed, anyone?). Burger King has ushered in innovations like the Subservient Chicken and branded X-Box games. What will they do next?

Well, to completely plagerize Monty Python: "And now for something completely different…"

Burger King California Whopper commercial BK's newest spot, presumably from their newest agency, features loads of beautiful food photography shot in interesting and innovative ways. They took all the ingredients for the guacamole and flew them in the air, moving camera shots in and through the onions, tomatoes and such. It's gorgeous camera work that says this is a delicious, quality food place. It just is a complete 180 from their brand and seems to float into McDonald's territory. Smart move or have they sold their weird quirky little souls? Take a look and let me know what you think.

The first half of the commercial looks like an Applebee’s ad – not a fast food joint. Could be a good thing for the BK brand.

  • Mike McClure says:

Yes, the food photography in the beginning is gorgeous and says quality food. It could be good for the brand – it’s just a different brand than the one they’ve been building for years.

  • Matt says:

Burger King has dropped ‘The King’ as such commercials did well to entertain their already faithful customers, but did little to attract new customers – especially with today’s increasingly health-conscious crowd. All the same though, Burger King is still the quirky brand that we’ve come to know it as, even in this commercial. This entire ad is a (rather humorous) allegory to birth – from conception (the salt) to actual delivery (pulling the onion). Beautiful, yet absolutely hilarious once you’ve recognized it.

Matt, I hadn’t tuned into the birth allegory, but now that you mentioned it and I went back and rewatched the commercial, I can totally see it! Thanks for sharing your insights.
