Ah ha! Bet you thought I was going to miss getting you an Ad of the Week this week. Well, I made it, just barely… and not on the usual Wednesday. But here it is.
In this TV commercial for Fiber One snack bars, a couple is unloading groceries and the wife is trying to convince her husband to try a bar. It's brilliant in it's understated acting and clever writing. It follows the long held strategy of people not believing something that tastes this good could have fiber in it. But, it's done with a bit of a twist.
The best line in the spot is when the wife tell him she things he needs more fiber in his diet and he says, "Fiber makes me… saaad." It's delivered with a very dry sense of humor that works. He then pulls out a bunch of broccoli and says "I might as well just eat…" and just when you think he's going to mention the fiber rich food in his hand, he drops it back in the bag and says, "this bag." Saying fiber bars are as tasty as paper bags. Of course, he eventually eats one, but thinks he's stolen his wife's candy bar.
So, here you go… enjoy the underplayed stylings of… the Fiber One players…
Fiber One: Fiber Makes Me Sad
Thanks to my Sr. Art Director, the Satch-man, for pulling my almost missing a week butt out of the fire and suggesting this one. If you have a suggestion to save my butt next week, leave it here in the comments. Or on twitter. Or Facebook. Or via email to info@yaffe.com. However you like.
Mike McClure, Not sad. Because I have a post (slightly) before the end of the week.
I LOVE the Fiber One commercials! They are so clever.
My favorite is the one where they are in the lunch room and Carl is talking about how he’s cared about a co-worker’s fiber for so long. They do a great job of grabbing your attention and sticking in your head.
Sometimes I love commercials, but I can’t remember which company or brand is associated with the commercial. I always remember Fiber One commercials, though. And I buy the products, so obviously they’re doing something right!
Yes, Nikki, they do a really good job of sticking to the brand premise and making sure you remember who the brand is!

I think the Male actor in the commercial is Matt Oberg who voices the character Mark Lilly from Comedy Central’s program “Ugly Americans”. The voice is almost unmistakable, if you are familiar with the show.
Mike:
I’ve watched the show a number of times, but not enough that I could pick Mark/Matt’s voice out from a crowd. I’ll definitely listen next time to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

Love it! Pure marketing genius! In our house,(even my six year old grand daughter)we use this line for anything we don’t want to do, but must!
That’s funny, Marni – I’ll have to start using it at my house!
