Christmas is only 2 days away. And if you're like most stores, or any brands for that matter, you will probably have some sort of holiday greeting on your social media channels come Christmas day. Whether you're going for a full on Merry Christmas greeting or the more encompassing (and PC) Happy Holidays, you don't have to just have those words and a holiday picture as your post. Try doing something different to stand out from the rest of your competition.
1. Find a creative way to say it with your product. Oreo is the master of working their cookies into posts relating to what's going on that day, whether it's a holiday or an event. How can you create a simple post that is clever, says seasons greetings and incorporates your store, product or brand? It doesn't have to be complicated. Maybe just a clever line and a picture of your product/store dressed for the holidays.
2. Pull together a quick holiday Vine or Instagram video. You can take a simple idea and your phone camera and whip together a fun Vine or Instagram video and post it on your various sites. The beauty of these is that they don't have to be very slick looking. The low production value is part of it's charm. Here are some examples of Vines put together by Verizon FiOS.

3. Create an animated GIF greeting. GIFs allow you to have a little animation in your greeting without going the full video route. It doesn't have to be something complicated. You can find a fun existing GIF and add your own message to it or create a simple greeting. Of course, you can go the whole break dancing Santa or Santa's sleigh sky writing your message. But simple and sincere work, too.
4. Get personal with your message. Rather than just a generic greeting, say something sincere and from your heart. Something that has the spirit of the holiday, but also the feel of the brand. You could even get employees to send their greetings, either in video, picture or just a list of some of the greetings by some fo the employees. Anything that personalizes your store or brand in a sincere way will make it seem that much more genuine and stand out.
5. Provide some added value. Instead of just wishing them a happy holiday, give them something they can use during their holiday. You can create a list of interesting tidbits or give them tips they can use. And if possible, tie those tips into your store or brand. For instance, if you sell food, give them a great holiday recipe or some thoughts on what they can do with leftovers.
Those are just a few ways you can make your holiday greetings stand out from the pack. I'm sure there are many more. Got an idea of your own you'd like to share? I'd love to hear it!
Mike McClure, wishing you all a very happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
