Ad of the Week: Google – Martin Van Buren

By January 24, 2013Ad of the week

Google commercial Martin Van BurenIf you read my Ad of the Week column regularly, you know I love me some Google ads. They consistently create ads that not only showcase their product attributes, but tap into our lives in a very human way. Their most recent ad for their Google Search App continues this trend beautifully. Every time I see it, it makes me smile.

The ad starts off with a mom trying to rush everybody out of the house in the morning to work and school. It's a typical scene played out in homes all over he world. Suddenly her daughter appears to let her know that it's "dress like a president" day at school and she's drawn, of all presidents, Martin Van Buren. What's a mom to do? Who even knows what Van Buren looks like? Why jump on her mobile device and Google him, of course!

I'm guessing if you have or have had school age children, you're familiar with this scenario. I couldn't even count how many times my kids forgot to mention something they needed for school until the last minute. And how many times my wife, through industriousness, ingenuity and sheer force of will, pulled off the impossible task of getting them what they need in time for school.

This ad takes that mom as last minute hero to the extreme, but pays it off very well. The reveal of the little girl dressed up as Martin Van Buren at the en is priceless. What can I say? I love this ad – it shows the utility of the product, relates to my life on a very human level and is very funny, to boot. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

So, what did you think? Did it touch you the way it did me? Let me know if you see an ad you think is worthy of an Ad of the Week nod, I'd love to see what you've been loving. See you next week.
