Skittles ads are always a little out there. They tend to be on the weird side, but usually in a good way. In fact, many of them, you're not really sure if they're brilliant or bad. And that's part of the charm. They always seem to be a blend of Napoleon Dynamite, Oompa Loompa, SNL ad spoofs and true marketing. This ad is no exception.
The Skittles "Tube Sock" ad features a shuffling giant humanoid tube sock that seems to be sharing an apartment with an elderly couple. The demographics of the featured couple is probably as far away from the target market as you can get. But, remember the target market is the same one who loved Betty White for Snickers and created a grass roots campaign that got her to host Saturday Night Live.
Rather than explain the ad too much, I'm just going to let you experience it. Then tell us what you think. Is it quirky and brilliant, stupid and awful or both?
