What kind of impact, if any, do you think the Super Bowl had on the city of Detroit? I heard this question brought up on a local talk radio station prior to this year’s Super Bowl. Everyone agreed it was a great pick-me-up and was good for the psyche of the city, but it seemed like a lot of callers that actually lived in the city felt it made no social impact whatsoever i.e. suburbanites won’t come into the city unless they know a lot of other suburbanites will be there too. What do you think?

We had a superbowl in Detroit? I thought the NFL just let Jerome bettis finish his career in his home town? Honestly, I think Jerome Bettis stole the spotlight, and reaped more benifits than the city ever will.
I think it was nice for the psyche of Detroiters, especially when we saw articles about Miami not being as nice. And some things got built and others got cleaned up that might not have for years without the deadline to worry about.
I think big events are nice, but the danger is thinking they are the solution. It’s style over substance. Comerica, anyone? Yes, they built some new things for the world to see, but from what I understand, once the Superbowl was over, they’re now closed because there weren’t enough people to sustain them.
