When is enough, enough?

Cell_phones Sooner than later social networking will be done over the phone. Research firm eMarket has said that cell phone use will grow from 50 million users to 174 million in 2011. It is amazing what cell phones can do nowadays. Cell phones can play videos, connect to the internet, show movies, etc. TV networks are now trying to show their television shows on your cell phone. You even have companies creating mobile social communities, which are centered around different interests including music, sports, or ethnicity. Once the user joins the community, they can create their own profile, and chat with friends or other users. The social communities are similar to Myspace, and Facebook. Not only are mobile communities beginning to grow, but GoTV is looking to allow users to share and create video clips via their cell phones.

With all of this new technology that is being put into the works, people soon won’t need a television, DVD player, or a computer for anything. It is great that our world of technology is improving, but it is starting to become a little ridiculous. What happened to cell phones only being used to communicate, whether it’s by dialing the phone, or text messaging? I am not sure it’s such a great idea to continue to add all of these different functions to cell phones.

I can see it now, just as the cell phone users’ increase to 174 million by 2011, so will car accidents. You have people now, including myself, that try to text message while driving. Just think about people trying to watch television, view videos, or even make a video themselves.

Personally, I think there is going to be a minor backlash to all this technology. No, people aren’t going to stop using their cellphones or computers. We’ll still use them a lot. I know I will. But I think people are going to start making conscious efforts to spend some time away from all this technology. I read one article about how more and more people are moving their home computers to areas in their home where they aren’t tempted to interact with them so much. And hotels are now offering their guests the option to store their cellphones and laptops so people won’t bother them.
