Ad of the Week Faceoff: Huggies Jeans Diapers vs. Travelers Happy Water Hole

By June 16, 2010Ad of the week

Boxing match This week, we're doing something different. Giving two different ad of the week choices in a big brand smack down. And you get to decide who's the winner! Two ads caught our eye this week, both are completely different. Both are good in their own way. Leave your vote for the best spot in the comments section below.

In this corner, we have Huggies Jeans Diapers. The ad puts a high fashion spin on kids who run around in diapers during the summer. It's shot with the same feel as a high fashion clothing line or perfume ad. With copy like "my diaper is full of chic" and a tagline that says, "The coolest you'll look while pooping your pants" how can you go wrong. On one side, as our Sr. Art Director said, it's old school, selling you something you don't need, but want." On the other, our Print Production Manager (a mom) says, "it's a good thing for parents who want to let their kids run around in a diaper in the heat of summer, but never really liked how that looks." You decide.

In the other corner, we have Travelers Insurance Water Hole. This is a quirky, fun romp of all kinds of animals who normally wouldn't get along together, getting along just fine. We have monkeys performing for hyenas, we have lions and zebras drinking together, meerkats riding on alligators after diving off of giraffes. It's a fun spot that makes the point that if we're not worried about danger, how much happier can we be. Is this fun and different or just corny. You decide.

  • Seriously, that Huggies ad makes me want to barf. It’s a diaper, and the copy is really bad. “My diaper is full…. full of fashion.” “I’m ready for #2 but I look like #1.” It’s creepy watching people ogling the baby like he’s a sex object and the narrator sounds ready to drool. It may be satire, but it’s over the top, pushing into seriously creepy territory.

Thanks for the comment, Kate. That seems to be the thoughts of half the people. We got votes via Twitter and they were evenly split between the two spots.

I think Huggies is all time best. great post.

  • If you could spare the time and energy, I’d so appreciate it if you’d email the link to The Happiness Project to people you think would be likely to enjoy it.

Hard to believe that two years ago, I hadn’t chngead a single diaper either. In fact the first one I chngead was immediately after SwingDaddy left for the hospital in an ambulance, leaving me alone in our house, holding our five day old Q. Hmmm, maybe that should be the subject of a blog post sometime. I sincerely hope your first changing was less dramatic.
