Ad of the Week: Walmart Clown

By February 4, 2010Ad of the week, Advertising

Clown Wow, who knew that Walmart had a sense of humor. Sure, they've done all kinds of ads that are light and family friendly, but this one is actually laugh out loud funny. I loved it when I saw it. But what really clinched it's ad of the week status for me was that I actually heard people around the office talking about it. When was the last time you heard people "around the water cooler" talking about a Walmart ad? Maybe when they changed their long running logo? Not the same. I heard several other people say, "I love that ad" and ones who hadn't seen it vowing to go online and look it up.

Of course, it's hard to go wrong when you're making fun of clowns in pain, while at the same time scaring a room full of little kids. What's not to like. Clowns are everybody's punching bag these days. In fact, another ad I really like right now is from another unlikely source of creativity, the U.S. Postal Service. They have the ad where the family desperately wants to ship back a creepy little clown doll that seems to move of it's own volition. It's not quite good enough for Ad of the Week status, but I'll add it in here for your viewing pleasure.
