Ad of the Week: Orcon Broadband – Together Incredible

By June 23, 2010Ad of the week

Iggy Pop How do you show off the incredible speed and power of your broadband service? How about pulling together 8 talented New Zealanders and Detroit rocker Iggy Pop to rerecord his song "The Passenger"  live over your broadband system? That's what New Zealand telecommunications company Orcon Broadband did. It's a fun video that illustrates a brand premise while engaging the viewers.

The spot shows the different performers in their own homes all connected via the Internet. They are a quirky bunch and Iggy is is funky punk rock self. 200 New Zealanders auditioned online and Iggy then cut them down to the eight he used in the video. In the "making of" video you can see Iggy working with all the musicians via the Internet to pull together all the pieces. It's a nice juxtiposition of the old man of punk in peering over his reading glasses and all these talented young muscians. For that alone, it's worth watching the longer video. Enjoy it!

I have long wondered about this and have notcied this re-occurring theme.Creative people are judged by their ability to generate ideas that count in a 4As agency, their livelihood depends on it and every agency today is smart enough to know that the really BIG idea is to sell more stuff, more often. The problem may not be fixed by firing the agency. Personally I believe the client has a responsibility to understand the IDEA behind the awarded campaign and see that it is implemented across touch points including POS. The agency has a responsibility to clarify the idea and demonstrate it is relevant and compelling. The fact is that customers love ideas and prefer brands with ideas especially brands that produce the goods.
